Acknowledging Barisan Nasional’s support, the Penang Chief Minister highlighted the importance of mutual cooperation in advancing the state’s interests. He stressed that this partnership would be vital in addressing challenges like GE16.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has commended Barisan Nasional (BN) for its crucial role in fostering political stability at both state and federal levels. A senior figure in the Democratic Action Party (DAP) under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, Chow emphasized the value of PH and BN’s collaboration in promoting effective governance and progress.
During his address at Penang MIC’s Deepavali open house, Chow highlighted BN’s support during the 2023 state election and acknowledged the contributions of its component parties, particularly MIC, in advancing his administration’s initiatives.
“Political stability has been a key enabler for us to govern effectively and deliver on development goals that uplift the community,” said Chow.
He further stressed the importance of the PH-BN partnership in maintaining the unity government, crediting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership for inspiring confidence both domestically and internationally.
Chow also praised Musa Sheikh Fadzir, Penang’s BN and Umno chief, for his efforts in strengthening the alliance between PH and BN. “The results of the 2023 state election proved the strength of this collaboration. It’s a clear example of how unity and teamwork lead to meaningful outcomes,” he said.
The PH-BN coalition secured 29 out of 40 seats in the Penang state assembly, with Perikatan Nasional (PN) claiming the remaining 11. DAP swept all 19 seats it contested, PKR won seven of its 13, and Amanah held onto one. Meanwhile, BN captured two of its six seats, with Sungai Acheh assemblyman Rashidi Zinol taking on a role in Chow’s state executive council.
As the nation looks toward the next general election in three years, Chow called for continued collaboration between PH and BN to sustain political stability and progress.
The Deepavali open house held additional significance for Chow, as it marked his first visit to a Penang MIC celebration in 15 years. Adding to the festivities, state MIC chief J Dhinagaran and other members presented Chow with a grand flower garland to honor his 65th birthday, which fell just a day earlier.
Former Penang chief minister and DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng also attended the event, underscoring the camaraderie within the coalition and reinforcing the spirit of togetherness.
